Revived General Store
After a fire closed the Albany General Store in 2013, the store remained vacant for 5 years before the Albany Community Trust (ACT) formed to oversee the damaged building’s renovation. Working alongside ACT, Preservation Trust of Vermont, the Genny/Three Ladies (the store operator), Engineering Services of Vermont, KAS Consulting, and STS Structural Engineering the existing building was expanded to compliment the surrounding village, provide a new commercial kitchen, dry basement storage, renewed retail space, store office space, a community dining room, and outdoor gathering space. The project also included the challenges of retaining contaminated soils on-site (from the abandoned gas tanks and excessive soil arsenic levels), managing waste water on the small village site, and the requirements for new state highway permitting.
